Publisher Apogee Software has announced that the second remake of the 1995 Rise of the Triad original will be released in 2023. An earlier remake was released in 2013. The Ludicrous Edition will feature a 4K resolution, updated textures and will run at 60 fps. Also, it will come with a comprehensive level editor. Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition will be out early next year on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. A reveal trailer was published earlier this week.
The original Rise of the Triad (ROTT) was released in 1994 and was originally supposed to be a follow up to Wolfenstein 3D. During development it was decided to turn it into an original game. By the time it was released, games like Doom and Heretic were already out and ROTT looked decidedly dated. The gameplay, however, was much faster and chaotic then the FPS games of the era, which made it a fun addition to the genre. The weapons were brutal and blowing your enemies to pieces was quite satisfactory. A personal favorite were the inescapable drunken missiles.
