Erina Koyama is a new artist on Ryuichi Sakamoto's commmons label. Her international release AMMO is undoubtly one of the most wondrous releases of this year. The album is full of gritty electronics blended with traditional Japanese intruments, which is reminiscent of Sakamoto's own work or even the recent work of his fellow YMO-member Haruomi Hosono. Vocally Erina Koyama carries the sweetness of Yuki (ex-Judy and Mary) and the sharpness of Ringo Shiina. Yet comparing her to them wouldn't do her justice. Koyama does a lot more experimenting, while still managing to create pleasant structured songs. She mostly does all the work herself, from the composing/writing to playing all the instruments and mixing the final recordings. AMMO can be downloaded from iTunes. Also check out her official MySpace for more samples and video's of her work.
